Question Transmission problem

Just a quick question. I have a 1999 F250 superduty with a 7.3. I have a K&N intake, a Banks Monster exhaust and a Superchips Tuner. I just got back from towing my 18 ft by 8.5 enclosed trailer about 15 miles up and down some hills. I noticed when I was backing it into my backyard that I smelled some tranny fluid. I looked under and it was dripping just behind the bellhousing. It is bright red fluid (not burnt) and I just had it replaced about 10,000 miles ago. I have a set of guages (pyro, trans temp and boost). The temp on the gauge read about 160 or 165. I did not think that was very high. I was wondering what may have caused the tranny to vent like that? Any ideas????
Thanks,
James

It's possible they could have put too much fluid in when you had it changed. As for your tranny temps, I don't know what they should run at but I pulled a 27' camper 500 miles once and the highest my tranny temps went was 142 degress.

165 is fine for a trans temp.....as far as the venting......it either has a problem starting internally or you may have had a check ball in the valve body stick for some reason and it could have been a one time fluke.....keep and eye on it and smell the trans fluid. it should have almost a sweet smell to it and if it smells like bunt oil it needs to be looked at......Marc

Thanks for the input. I checked the fluid that came out and it was still like new (pink in color) and it did not smell burnt. I was kind of thinking that it may be an internal problem maybe starting. It was weird though, I just got back from towing the trailer and 2 4wheelers (about 6000 pounds) down to Tennessee last weekend (about 600 or so miles) and I did not have a problem down or back but when I towed it less than 10 miles up a few hills and at a speed of about 35-45 mph average, it decided to vent. I just though that it was weird. I may have it checked at my buddies tranny shop!! Thanks for the advice.

I`ve had two trucks that did the same thing. They were 92`s so they might have had a different trans. I fixed it with a bigger cooler. I don`t understand why you would have problems no hotter than it got.

whenever you are pulling or backing a heavy trailer at very slow speeds over rolling terrain, I would recommend you put your truck in low range (if it's a 4WD). I've seen a lot-o trucks puke fluid because they "push" the trans too hard at 1 mph. let gears do the work instead of pumps.

Mine did the same thing last week, while pulling a 7000 lb trailer. Except it burped over half of the fluid. Filled it back up and made it home fine (250 miles) then the next day it refused to shift into 3rd gear, then the overdrive button started flashing. WTH!! Any help would be appreciated. I dont wanna go to the stealership for this!!

you have codes in the computer causing the OD button to flash. most simple scan tools will not retreave these codes. also, there is two possibilities with the not shifting into third. one is it could be computer related, the computerw wont let it shift into third due to whatever code is there to prevent total failure. the other is a mechanical problem that is preventing the shift.......Marc

possibly......i wont garantee that to be the case, it still could be a mechanical failure, but it is possible.....
