Manual swap

I have a 96 F-250 4X4 CC short box with a five speed and 7.3. I am wondering if I can swap in a six speed from a 99 and up that had a 7.3. If anyone knows if this can happen or just know how to do it please let me know. I would think it would be a direct bolt in since they are both from a 7.3. Thanks

Yes it should as long as it is out of a 4x4 truck. But you will need a loaner truck for the parts. Your going to need the clutch pedal, cultch cylinder, Hydrualic lines, Flywheel, your gonna need to cut a hole in your floor of your truck for the shifter, Your gonna need to cut a hole in the firewall for the clutch pedal. You may have to replace the brake and throttle pedal cause they might be different in a truck with a manual. Your gonna need a new pcm as they are different because one is manual trans and the other is auto trans. By the time your done doing this swap you would have been better off and cheaper to have sold your truck and bought one with an automatic in it.

OOps I figured when he said 5 speed he meant 5 speed auto. In his case it would bolt up, but he still may need a pcm as the 6 speed has that extra gear. I don't know if it would mess with the engine in his truck. As for hydrualics his truck should already have all that. Your still gonna need a tranny out of a truck with 4x4.

You shouldnt have to change your pcm, because your pcm has no programming for your manual transmission and doesn't care what gear you are in. You would have to worry about is driveshaft lengths and possibly your transfer case because they changed them in the Superduties. Your rear driveshaft would have to be shortened and your front driveshaft would have to be lengthened because the six speed is longer than the five speed. If the transfer case doesnt bolt right up, you could probably find or make an adapter plate. Or just install a Superduty transfer case. You might have to swap the Clutch Master Cylinder and lines from a Superduty too.

Probably just better to rip out everything you think you would possibly need from a donor truck in the junk yard and it should bolt right in. Flywheel, clutch, tranny mounts, tranny crossmember, transmission, gear shifter, hydraulics, transfer case and If you find the right bed and cab configuration you could even steal the driveshafts and not have to modify anything except possibly change the U-Joints and/or Yokes.
