Fuel economy.

Hello! I am a newbie to the forum and have some questions. I have a 2002 F250 with the Banks six gun, level 4 chip, trans command, AFE stage 2, power elbow with 4 inch exhaust, compressor wheel with wastgate actuator and all necessary gauges. Just this weekend i pulled a 4500 pound travel trailer. I was getting, according to my little information center in my overhead console, 11 miles per gallon. From what I hear from some friends of mine thats not very good. Normal driving with no load im getting about 14 mpg.(six gun on level 2) Is something wrong that im missing or is that about average? My EGTs were 670 doing about 70 mph measured on my down pipe off the elbow. Im just curious considering diesel is 4 bucks and my wallet is still crying. Any help would be great

Yeah that seems low. What other mods do you have such as lift or oversize tires? Is it a crew cab? I towed a 16 ft car hauler with a jeep wrangler running 70-72 and I avg 15mpg.

welcome to the form, and here's a free

I would be relocate your EGT sending unit to the driver's side exhaust manifold. its a whole lot more accurate.

I just put a 4 inch lift on it but no oversize tires. Its a crew cab short bed. My other question is how accurate is that information center in the overhead console regarding fuel economy?

That overhead console is fairly accurate but for best results - hand calculate at your next fill-up! As far as the towing is concerned - I have a 2003 6.0 SD 4wd long bed - no lift - stock everything except for LT 305 Nitto's. I pull a 24' fully enclosed trailer weighing in around 8000 - 10000 pounds in the mountains and average 10-12mpg. So I would think with all the gagets you have - and reading so many posts on here - your mileage should be better then 11!

You mentioned you were doing about 70mph. It is well documented these engines get the best mileage at 55-60mph. I know my mileage drops considerably when I'm pulling at that speed (which is my 10-12) but goes upwards of 14 when I slow down to 55-60.

Straight highway 55-60 I average 22. Up it to 70 and I drop to 16-17. Goes down from there.

Best of luck to you and welcome to the Forum!!!

22!!!! I cant even get that with no load. i can see the dropping the speed down while towing which i will test out next weekend. I get to tow my buddies cummins!! With no load my computer says 14.3 mpg doing 55mph.

Yeah - 22! But lets keep in mind - you have a 7.3. I have a 6.0. 6.0's typically do get better mileage.

Plus I have found - not to use cruise. Cruise will downgear more often when not fully necessary in my opionion. I will gladly loose a few mph to stay in top cruising gear where Cruise will downgear to maintain chosen speed. Of course - downgearing will lower your mileage.

I changed my oil from Mobil 1 to Rotella 5w-40 - I gained 2mpg with that. Blew me away - I didnt expect it. I also run with my tailgait down when possible - I do gain mileage there. Obvously when towing I cant drop my tailgate - but I do all I can when I can. Biggest gain - maintain 55-60 - straight flat highway.

Remember - that little computer up there is nice to have but not totally accurate. Best accuracy is hand calculating. Plus - to get a "current" guestimate of mileage - re-set the computer - it will then show you current mileage as it calculates. Your mileage will be higher. But best is still hand calculating.
