I thought the same thing on mine when I first got it, and quickly learned that all the strokers are different, I thought it was burning oil, but one of the guys told me to let it go and see if it dropped anymore. It didn't, it ran just a little below half way up on the cross hatched area of the stick. I got to looking, and the previous owner had even written 14 quarts under the hood cause that 15th quart just burns out. I was adding another quart about every 1000 miles too, hope this helps, just let it go a little longer and see if it keeps dropping before you sink money into locating the problem, keep us posted! Welcome aboard! |

I put 15 quarts in mine. The oil level is right at the top of the cross-hatched area (full mark). I have yet to have any kind of rough starting/ idling like you guys are describing - I'm sure I've jinksed it now!! The other thing is that the book says that 2 qts are for the filter replacement (ie 13 without filter). Does your dipstick read correctly? I mean, do you have the right dipstick? Well, you know what I am asking (I hope). Maybe someone swapped out to the wrong one for some reason - just brainstorming here.

Oil Loss
Hey... I know this may sound strange, but Ford actually has a specification for oil loss over a 1,000 mile period and it is one quart. I'd be kinda pissed if my car burned a quart every 1,000, but in the world according to Ford, this is normal . Also, just about every 7.3L I've every filled has taken 15 to 15 1/2 qts. I think that's about average for that engine.

I agree with carlopro. Diesels do by design use a little oil, more so than a gasoline engine. I added 1 quart in the last 5,000 miles I drove. I felt that is pretty good.
