Engine Whistle

Does anyone out there know why my 7.3 2002 Powerstroke whistles (loud) when under load. Meridian Ford here in Idaho has been attempting to figure it
for about two years! Why is this so tuff for their Turbo Specialist to figure out? When I begin to climb a hill, I can hear the pressure building and then a loud whistle, so loud that vehicles next to me hear it! They first told me that I had spun out my berrings in the Turbo, so they replaced it (the turbo). Next they told me that it was my Waste gate not opening and closing properly, so they supposidly fixed that, then they said it was a belt squeeking and replaced that. Well it still is whistling and Ford and myself are both burnt out, and they don't appear any closer to a solution. Please respond if you have encountered this problem or have a possible solution for me. Thank you.

Good to have you. Where is Meridian compared to Coeur d'Alene? Thats where I'm from.

Anyways, is it whistling louder than other Ford PSD's? Your turbo should whistle to some degree. How loud is it? Or is it a different pitch than the normal turbo whistle?

I take it, it is a whistle that never use to be there before? Although it sounds like it's may have been there almost since new? Do you have a boost leak somewhere, either in one of the flexable hoses connecting all the plumbing, are in the innercooler itself? I hope they have checked for that. Just my two cents. Hope you get it figured out. Ice

This article talks about a lot of good things to keep in mind, but what I was looking for on your problem, see the second from last paragraph where it talks about boost leaks. I learned something there, too. Do you have any of these signs?

I can't offer many ideas on how to cure that problem, I can only say my turbo produces a lot of whistle the more i'm on it. I like it, and it's normal so as long as nothing is wrong i'd enjoy letting other people hear it!

Paul, a few years back ford dealers where replacing turbos for a noise like the one that you have described. Ford inturn looked into this and sent out a special service message. The messaged stated that under heavy load the belt will slip and cause a loud high pitch wistle noise, the noise is corrected by replaceing the belt, tensioner, and water pump pully. I know that you probably still think that the noise is turbo related, I have installed this kit on dozens of trucks with the same problem. Your local ford dealer should know about the belt kit ssm.

Some 7.3 engines may exhibit a loud squeal noise from the engine area when the engine is under load and the fan clutch is locked up, typically in hot and dusty conditions. Another complaint may be the fan clutch oscillating or not locking up. This may be due to dust accumulating on the back side of the belt and causing it to slip on the water pump pulley. This usually affects only 2002 model/year vehicles, but may occur in trucks built from 99-01 if the belt was replaced after July 01. On single rear wheel trucks, replace the serpentine belt with P/N 1C2Z-8620-NA on single-alternator engines, and 1C2Z-8620-PA on dual-alternators. Broadcast Message 3848.

A service kit has been released for 2002 trucks only. It includes a belt, tensioner and water pump pulley. Use 2C3Z-8620-AA for single alternator and 2C3Z-8620-BA for dual alternators. Broadcast Message 0718.

i know i am runnin a little behind on this reply but i had this problem when pullin a load or at high RPMs and with a new air filter the problem was solved

how many miles you put on it since problem started? If low Id look at belt tensioner pulley.

hey ghostrider. when my truck had that loud whistle i looked into all of the intake first and my air filter( really ditry) had been almost sucked inside out. so i changed it and the whistle stopped. i guess i was starving the turbo
