POS Cam sensors!

So has anyone else out there experienced the famous Camshaft Position Sensor failing while driving? I was on my way to Cincinatti a few months back when mine failed. What an experience, it caused my truck to jolt pretty decently, and puffed some blue smoke. I was in a caravan with about 5 others, all family members. We were going to King's Island cuz we got family day tickets for like 10 bucks when they're normally like 30. Anyways I could have been very unlucky with it happening there in Cincy which is about 2 hours from here, and it was a Sunday when no dealers are open of course to provide me a dealer only part, on top of that it costs about 200 bucks! How lucky did I get? It happened about 15 miles outside of home. Also, my girlfriend at the time knew a few farmboys and one happened to have a dad with a 99 stroker. This guy actually had an extra sensor that was used and still good, and said he'd sell it take 100 bucks for it. He came out and met up with us, put the sensor in and saved me a huge headache! About 3 hours later I got home.
Oh, by the way, I missed out on the King's Island trip. BUT...my house was empty and I did mention my girlfriend was with me didn't I?

Yes, I had quite the up and down day. I don't know about the 6.0's but I heard the 7.3's were pretty notorious for having that lovely part fail. And let me tell you, it will strand you! I recommend carrying an extra one in your glove compartment. It's small enough to fit in one of your pockets and expensive enough to empty both of them! But I have heard you can get the part through international at about half the price so who knows!

Is this senser a hall effect or a magnetic pickup?

It's a magnetic pickup. I decided to get some more use out of it after I removed it from my truck - it's now become a magnet on my fridge in the garage!

I was leaving the driveway saturday AM and the powerstroke shut off immediately (no sputtering). I checked possible fuses, tapped fuse back in, engine started & ran for 3-4 seconds. then sudden cut off. It will not restart. Does this sound like a possible cam position sensor problem? Thanks.

I would have to say that it's very likely it's your cam sensor, but check the dtc codes if there are any first. Mine only sputtered when it first failed, I think because I was doing about 65 running around 1900rpm. Yours likely didn't since you were idleing. If you have any type of DTC code reader or know anyone who does it should spit out a code for whichever part has failed. If you don't get a code, you'll probably have to tow it somewhere. I don't have my Superchips instruction booklet, which has all the dtc codes for 99-03's listed in it. I left it in my friends truck - good timing! Otherwise I could tell you which code to look for. Mine shut off several times within seconds after I tried to restart without sputtering. What year is your truck and how many miles are on it? Mine is a 99 and the sensor went at about 128k, which i'm told it's likely to go anytime after 80k. If it's the cam sensor, call up international first and see if they can get it for you instead of going through ford cuz the ford price is around 200. I've heard you can get it through international for about half that. Let us know what it ends up being. Oh and by the way, if you buy it it's about 10 minutes fromt the time you crawl under until the time you crawl back out...it's a quick job.

Thanks for the info, I'll try for a code reading today.The truck is a 02 with about 92 k miles. We have had hot humid weather here and I had let the vehicle sit for a day and a half. I plugged in the block heater last night in case I needed to dry something out no luck. I'll keep you informed.
