2002 F250 Vibration/Rumble/Rattle
I have noticed that a lot of people here have vibrations and noises. I believe mine to be a wheel/hub bearing, but at what they cost would like reassurance. I have a slight noise/vibration from 35-45 mph. It is more noticable from 65 and very loud at 70 and up. It also more noticable when I let off the gas and coast at high speeds. It seems more noticable and louder from the drivers side. I noticed this when I had my budy drive it so I could feel and listen. I have checked the ball joints and tie rods. Balls joints were suspect #1 after all ready replacing the passenger side. The steering components were pretty tight and I had very little to no play in the wheel in any direction. I have also check the hub it unlocks fine. I also tried running it locked in and unluck and it doesn't seem to matter. I have seen i write ups here that te wheel bearing can go bad and never loosen up. I have seen that Marc seems very handy with these types of questions , but any input would be great. Does in sound like I need to replace the hub assembly?

1999 Ford F-350 7.3 4x4 105000 miles
I've got the same problem, sounds like a wheel bearing going bad, not the needle bearings. I just replaced the passanger side hub/ axle and needle bearings and seals, but this was a very noticeable growl washboard sound. Maybe the harmonic balancer /It should be a real bad motor shake. I greased my spline shaft and this did nothing. The next thing to check out is my transfer case any sugestions. Sometimes when I shut it down it shakes and makes a sound like somethings comming apart but nothings loose. ![]()

When I greased the spline shaft I also greased the univeral after the pinion took the cups off, and the universal still had grease in them. They should have had a grease fitting on them along with the spline shaft/ steering nuckle universal replaced with greasable ones. I will take the driver side hub off tomorrow and look at the needle bearing inside the hub, if the axle shaft is not rough from a dry needle bearing a common problem I will replace the needle bearing and grease. There is very little play on the short shaft side compared to what I replaced on the passanger side long shaft. Maybe this needle bearing also went dry and is starting to make noise on the short shaft. There is no play in the wheel bearings and as far as I can tell no noticeable noise from the bearings. If I still have problems with these hubs, time to go to Dynatrax system and forget about the Ford non servicable hubs. I will change all univeral joints and put greasable in. And tap where the spline shaft driveline are and put grease fittings on them. I beleive you have to make your Ford a SUPER DUTY the engineers forgot how and were looking for service revenue. Next will be transmission and transfer case.
