my old man's 99 does that all of the time.... one time it did it and a buddy of mine was riding along with me. he owns an early 99 model too, anyway, i kinda thought it was wierd too, but my friend swears that it is just something in the AC system. maybe a vent door slamming shut, i dunno. but he said it used to do it on his truck all of the time and a ford service man told him that was what it was and fixed it somehow.
i would check your front end out like i have on my dad's truck, but if you cant find anything i wouldnt worry too much.
dad's truck still does it every once in a while and I couldnt find anything wrong, but im no expert

when does it make the noise? When turning? Or is it just an out of the blue pop? it could also be a front u-joint, or one or both of the hubs could have stayed locked in? I have also noticed a rattle in the front end of some that is due to the bearings in the front not having grease, had this prob on mine and was able to fix with marine grease! GoOd luck and keep us informed!!

if it makes the noise when turning, inspect the spring insilators. The kit to replace them from ford is cheap and will quiet them right up, although its a two man job to replace them if you value your fingers.....

If the pop just happens on start up its normal, its the blend door motor getting vacume, and closing the blend door....
