Busted U joint

On Friday I busted the rear U-joint on my truck. I got a new one and realized that I need a new yoke also. I was wondering if I would still be able to drive the truck back and forth to work? It is only about three miles each way and I allready have the rear drive shaft out. Would doing this mess up the front end at all? The fastest I would be going is about 30 mph. and I only would have to drive it tomorrow.

As long as you don't make sharp turns and your not going fast or far. You should be ok, when my carrier bearing went out on my rear driveshaft I limped home 40 miles using 4wheel drive with the rear driveshaft removed. Also since you are doing work on the rear driveshaft, might want to inspect the carrier bearing and might want to think about replacing it since you already have the driveshaft removed. Just a thought though.

Thanks for the reply. I should be able to get it fixed tommorrow. I don't think that my drive shaft has a carrier bearing in it, it is a solid one that was put in when the lift was installed. Does that sound right or is there still one there?

No youre right if it has a one piece driveshaft then you have no carrier bearing. And you will be okay driving it in 4 wheel drive. Just curious how did you bust the driveshaft and yolk??

The worst part of breaking it was I was just driving down the road. I can't even say that I was doing anything cool like racing someone or off roading. I was going about 35mph when it just broke! The few days before it broke right before it would shift at about 2000 rpm's it would start to vibrate but after it shifted it would stop. I checked everything that I could think of the night before and could not figure it out, I guess that the U-joint was wedged in there because it had no play in it when I checked it. Since it was dark out at the time I did not see that there was any damage to anything. The yoke got chewed up pretty good and one of the caps that hold the U-joint in it busted.
