With the vehicle running and a good alternator and voltage regulator (internal) working properly you should show 14 to 15 volts. I would use an external multi-tester and check at the battery terminals. If you can watch the meter and turn on your headlights you should see a very quick momentary drop in voltage and it should return to whatever it was reading in that 14-15 volt range.
