6.9 HELP!!
Me and a buddy have found a 1986 Ford F350 4 door dually 2WD. The truck has the 6.9 diesel with a 4 speed manual transmission. The truck is in good shape, the paint is a little faded but the interior is in real good shape.
The truck run great one day and the next it will not start. Spray it with a little ether and it will run fine the rest of the day. I know nothing about this motor any idea what causes this? Do they have a cam sensor like the 7.3's? We are looking at buying this truck but what is it worth? I don't know the mileage on it? I haven't heard an asking price yet, is $800-$1,000 reasonable? Thanks for the help! |

800-1000 bx? Hell yeah! It could just be something stupid small to be fixed.

Sounds Like the glow plugs or the glow plug relay. If it has been started wih ether it will likely be addicted to it. The glow plugs get burned off with the use of ether.

when it does run how does it run? does it run kinda rough? because it could also be sumthing to do with the pump. i've noticed on 7.3's and 6.9's that i have worked on if the pump is even getting a little weak they dont want to start all the time.

The truck seems to run just fine, when it is running. Is $1,000 too much to pay?

Thats a pretty good price. You could part it out for at least double that. The glow plugs and relay are easy to replace and relatively cheap. Try that and see if it helps. If it's the injector pump, you may be looking at a rebuild. You will still have a good truck for the money.

I think we are going to buy it. We hope to turn it pretty quick but who knows. For $1,000 it ain't a bad truck no matter how you look at it.

ya for 1000 thats a very good deal. and you cant go wrong with a 6.9, they are the hardest running motor ford made in my opinion.
