Starting off in 2nd!!!

Im borrowing a freinds 86 econoline cube van and it looks to have the 6.9 and a 3 spd auto. I got it from him and it was knocking real bad so I put 5quarts of oil in it till it showed on the dipstick and she ran alil better after that. I have figured out that it starts off in second unless I shift it manually then it will start off in 1st. Is there anything I can do real quick so I dont ahve to keep shifting it manualy? Also how can I confirm its a 6.9?
