Exhaust problem?

I just took the muffler off of my '86 6.9 banks turbo, its straight pipe back to about where the cab ends under the truck - could there be any problems by running it like this? over heating etc? I plan on getting 4' pipe and elbowing it out right in front of the rear wheel in the next month or so
