My buddy bought a 1984 6.9 4X4 with a 4 speed, it doesn't have a tach, how hard would it be to put one in it being a diesel?

Does it have a pickup in the injection pump gear cover? If it doesn't I guess you could get a pump cover, sensor and a tach from a truck at the salvage yard and wire it up.

^^^ what he said. You may also need the pump gear. I don't know if there is a difference between the non-tach-pickup and the tach-pickup gears. Other than that, I don't see any reason why you couldn't swap some parts from a 7.3l with a tachometer.
