Bought this 2011 4-door loaded Lariat with a 6.7 Diesel engine that was highly touted as the best diesel truck ever.

I service the truck religiously and baby it. Never been in the mud, never abused. Driving to an appointment yesterday and the truck started knocking then violently shaking from the engine. I pulled over immediately and turned her off. Looked under the front of truck and 13 quarts right there on the ground.

Had the truck towed to dealer and today find out the 1st and 5th cylinder are showing nothing. They removed the oil pan and crankshaft is jumping around freely. The long block is shot. The short block is shot and apparently the turbo and all. The sympathetic diesel mechanic felt terrible telling me that the entire engine and components need to be replaced.

The damage: $24,233.67........ Although he can tell I immediately shut the truck down due to no evidence of blowback in the exhaust, he said it was a possibility that I could be required to pay another $3,000-$4,000 if the exhaust showed damage after engine replacement.

I have no idea what to do. This truck cost $60,000++ and is only 3 years old with 124,058 easy miles on it. I owe money on it still so I am at a loss.

Any suggestions? Should ford cover this basically totaled truck? I'm in the midst of the dilemma and need advice or help from someone not emotionally tacked with a $24,000 estimate.

My plan is to cover every site on the internet with this info and contact ford to see if they will stand behind the product. This truck has cost me thousands with the exhaust sensors going out time and time again while leaving me stranded on the side of the road. I will not rest until everyone is informed of this and Ford stands up to their mechanical workmanship failing. Any attorney interested, please contact me.

Build date was November 18-2010.. Just Received an email from Ford Tier 1 CRC. Of course the guy by the name of Leif, stated that Ford has documented my concerns and suggest that I stay in contact with my local dealership. Due to the mileage of the vehicle ford is unable to provide assistance.

BUYER BEWARE of DIVESTING $60,000 into a truck that may only run 3 years, 124,000 miles. This is the Ford 6.7 Diesel F-250. Thinking of buying a Ford F-250 6.7 Diesel. Think again. New engine quoted at $24,000+ (Hopefully, these key words will get some good search rankings)

Hes right. I know a ton of 6.7 dodges that had a similar fate

Really sorry to hear about your issues buddy. 24k is a ridiculous amount to pay for a 3 year old engine. That's pitiful to me. If It was my truck, I wouldn't be putting a 6.7 back into it. If your going to invest half of a house worth in bill to pay for the truck alone, it better last me the length of a mortgage. Lol. Hope all works out in the end. Just grab the reins and stay positive. :please: sent

Dude that sucks too hear what happened:tard:

Not too be a smart arsh but the 6.7L will never be the 7.3L, did the exhaust system have anything to do with the engine failure??? I thought that's what I had been hearing is the exhaust system is toasting engines somehow, but I also think the price they have quoted is way out of line. I'd look for a used engine or better yet get a 7.3L.

Sounds like a typical dealer lying and trying to overcharge a customer. Had a dealer down here in Houston tell my gf that she has to bring in her '13 for DEF fluid because shes not allowed to fill it herself cause the fluid is toxic or caustic or some ****. Then they charged her almost $100 to put in 5 gal. I put a stop to that **** real quick.

Find an independent shop that wont screw you over to make a buck. I can recommend someone in Houston and I can even offer to help you get the truck down here if needed.

Update:

A regional service guy with Ford called me today and said that ford had programs in place for this type of catastrophic engine failure. He said that Ford would pay $5,000 of the repair bill IF, I would pay the additional $2000 to the dealer for discovery and tear down. So that's actually $3,000. Then offered me the friends and family pricing plan as a second option if I wanted to trade the truck in. Talk about upside down. While I appreciate them reaching out to me, I am in no better shape than I was before the call. What do you think of this program and offer?

I'd put a used engine in it and trade it on a Dodge or go to a gasser. These Fords have gotten stupid expensive!

Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market. looks like 5-6k for a used engine

Find a wrecker selling a 2012 engine and get that put in at a recommeneded independent shop.

The 6.7 is actually a really good engine and is awesome with the deletes done to it. One of the reasons the early engines failed was due to heat from fuel being sent into the dpf during regen combined with weak valves.

Your timing on buying a new truck was bad. Take it for what it is and move on. If you search for 2012 and newer engine failures, you will not find any, for 2011 there are many. Ford found the flaws, refused to acknowledge the problems, repaired under warranty and changed the materials used for late 2011 and newer.

You can type in 2012 engine failures in the search feature right here on this forum and find failures. Let's not pretend they don't happen. The percentage is probably small given the number produced, but when it happens to YOU and the dealer is telling you it will cost $24,000.00, trading it in for another one is not at the top of my list. I'm sure it is an awesome engine when it runs as it should but not too many folks can take a hit like that when/if it does self destruct. Too rich for my bank account. I realize that any thing mechanical can suffer a breakdown regardless of manufacturer, but the cost associated with these newer diesels is beyond ridiculous.

i should have worded that as "you will find very few"

i searched and couldn't really find anything relating to "2012 6.7 powerstroke failure. there is a lot about the 2011's with the valve problems.

it's a tough pill to swallow but i figure it's going to be a huge waste of time and effort by the OP to try and get them to warranty it. at the very most they'll cut the bill in half or something and it's still going to be 12 grand.

the 2012 engines are known for holding together well so i figure $6000 on an engine and and maybe $3000? for install would be the best and most economical option for him.

Too many chiming in with "you should have bought a $5,000 POS like mine" instead of a new truck.

If you wrecked your '00 7.3 engine in 2001, the engine replacement bill from the dealer would have been about 20 grand. I recall hearing about a guy taking his '97 powerstroke to the dealer and getting a 15k bill for repairs that weren't engine replacement.

If that's the case then Ford should at least step in and ask that dealer to stop raping the man. Articles like these really give Ford a black eye from the publics perspective. I hear how wonderful this engine is from many owners but when you read about this failure and how the repair cost is over half the value of the truck, how can you expect anyone to want one? And I'm not buying into that BS about how, "Dodge and Chevy are having these failures too". I've looked on the Dodge Cummins forums trying to find issues because I have been considering buying a new dually and I'm NOT finding fuel system problems or dropped valves. It does seem that Ford and Dodge diesel trucks have less failures and run better once they have their emission systems deleted but I'm not sacrificing MY warranty to do that.

Yeah, guess I'll just hold on to my "7.3 with stock hp of a current honda civic, that rides like a train and turns like a school bus" for a while longer.

I really appreciate all the support. It certainly could be debatable for some but for me to buy this truck, I am not a happy camper with the quote and the $5,000 offer from Jason at ford. Btw, whoever should need his number it is 866-631-3788 and his extension is 77782. They require you to use a ford dealer for service if they are willing to help and the best quote I've been able to get is $19,468 plus tax. I don't give a flying flip if it is 3 years old or 4 years old, who gives a damn. This truck should not be totaled (engineless) at 124,000 miles. No modifications, no mud and has been serviced as required. I'm still beside myself as I make another payment tomorrow. My insurance which is geico will not cover it and the ford guy calls me everyday with the same take it or leave it offer. I am taking this to the next level S of tomorrow morning. Whatever that means and or takes.

You are living the nightmare that haunts every new diesel owner. I could never afford a 25,000 repair. No way. I would be feeding the kids Romin with a 10,000 repair bill. I feel for you bro.

Oh yeah, and 5,000 from from Ford when their dealer is over charging 10,000 just adds fuel to the fire. Wait fire??? Things do catch on fire...

one thing that is going to hurt your cause is mentioning that you're posting all of this on forums. if ford does end up covering it, you're going to make it public which will open up a can of worms for them.

your best bet is to play the broke and quiet loser that can't afford to spend $500 on your truck without taking out a payday loan.
