Diesel goes, stops, smokes then goes again..

I have a 2004 Ford Excursion with a diesel. I was driving at normal pace and all of a sudden it slowed to a stop and started smoking, and very heavy gray smoke. It never turned off and I kept crawling to get off the road...then all of a sudden is went back to normal.

I went home and changed the air filter. I took it out for a test and a mile from my house it did the same thing again....no power, heavy gray smoke and still running. It cleared and I continued to drive. Now I have gone about 30 miles with no issue.

Any clue??
