Check your trailer plug on the truck. We had to replace a plug on one of our f250's at the ranch. We experienced the same scenario, and determined the truck plug was the culprit.

A simple way to check would be to hook up another trailer and see if the message repeats itself. If it does take it to the dealer and have them test the trailer plug to determine where the fault is.

Also you could plug b, turn your lights on and make sure the trailer lights up.

Take the plug apart (cover should have a lockscrew holding it in place) and look for corrosion on any of the terminals. Also make sure the wires are screwed down tightly, they can come loose. If there is corrosion, get a wire brush and clean the terminals. Then clip the wire(s) at the end, strip off more insulation, and start with fresh wire in the terminals. Put a coating of dielectric grease (clear stuff in a can) over everything to protect it, water can get in those plugs and cause all sorts of problems.
