Running rich

Over the holiday drove back to cold weather county. 12 deg F back home. During the cold start ups I noticed she smelled like she was running a little richer than usual. Didn't think anything about it until today when I noticed it was smoking a different color off the start. Usually at take off I can get a little puff of black smoke. Today I noticed it was very light in color. Not white but it did have a white tent to it. Any thoughts or am I just being paranoid? I have not upgraded the H&S tuner in over 6 months as a side note. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Were you running an sort of additives to prevent gelling? I assume you at least had winterized diesel in an area with those temps....I just got back from WI and I had run a bunch of additive and even some 911 because I started gelling...all that stuff made my exhaust smell different and smoke a tad more.

Good point I was running more stanadyne, but then again I always run that additive. I really only noticed it at idle at start up.

My truck ran the high idle longer at those low temps too...I assume longer high idle equals more smell and or smoke

When my truck is cold if I let off the gas from 1500-2k ( like letting off for a stop light halfway thru an acceleration ) I will get some blue smoke from how rich my truck runs before it reaches full operating temp. Once its warm its fine.
