what I'm not understanding is why they are $1700-$2000.. i just don't get that

Because its a new engine (i'm pretty sure the 6.7's change every year or two) and H&S and spartan are the best out there are far as DPF Delete programmers. It takes a lot of research and coding on the 6.4 and 6.7 and that can also explain their prices.
