black plastic piece under bumper

I was wondering what the purpose of the black plastic piece under the front bumper is. I would assume it has to do with fuel economy and aerodynamics but I don't like the way it looks and was considering taking it off. i just want to make sure it doesn't have a reasonable purpose before I remove it. I'm sure Ford would put it there in the first place if it didn't do anything but i cant imagine it would improve anything to much.

It's there for fuel economy. Get one off a 2wd truck. It's much smaller and looks way better.
