From my understanding, the '15 turbo itself is larger and has a stronger wheel. If you aren't going crazy I would say you will be ok with the '13 turbo. But upgrading isn't a bad idea either for piece of mind now and more potential down the road. There is a thread labeled "11-14 turbo kits master list" a few posts own from yours that prices out all the different options on the first page.
Go with the '15 kit. More power, more reliable and not much more than the replacement '13. I have heard a simple '15 kit is around $2,500-3,000. You will also need a tune adjustment to maximize the new toy.
Turbo problems are most common in 2011, and some in the 2012 model year. 2013, 2014 turbos are good (better bearings I believe). 2011-2014 turbos are GT32 64mm, 2015 up are a GT37 72.5mm turbo. More boost and more power from the GT37 is the advantage. Wanting more power, go for it. But if your not looking for more power, then if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I'm not gonna get in a pis*ing match but look up turbo swap kits from anywhere and call ford directly. Call No Limit, River City, Midwest, Elite or any other 2015 turbo kit company that has them for sale and they will say 61mm for the stock new model turbo. Maybe the exit wheel but not inlet for what you are talking about.
I don't get into pi**ing matches here. There's different diameters to different parts on these turbos. I was simply referring to the turbine wheel diameter.
Ok. So truck only has 25K on odometer. Don't really "need" a new turbo. Just trying to justify my mod addiction. Would it be worth the swap or just wait to save some $$ and go with H&S?
Go with a StreetmaxR! It will cost a little more but will drive awesome and it's a 2015 turbo on steroids. It will also pass emissions testing with dpf and Egr on if ever needed. But like I said it is more costly. I guess it depends on what your goals are now compared to the future. A streetmax will support up to 650hp. A regular 2015 turbo will give you up to 500ish hp. Your turbo now is good for 430-460 hp. It also depends on your tuning and fuel mods to get those numbers. I would talk to No Limit about your options and prices. Maybe he can work out a bulk deal given your hefty list! Good luck!
I just did the streetmax R 65.5 upgrade and wow its amazing! Not to add to the little debate you two had haha, but turbo sizes are always measure on the inducer (cold) side and never the exducer (hot) side. So a 2015 turbo would be "referenced" as a 61mm.
To the OP, if you tow a lot and are looking to keep your EGT's down its a big upgrade. I dropped 250 degrees on myEGT's under full throttle pulls from my stock 14 turbo to the new one. A 2015 turbo will more than do the trick but if you are looking to expand your horizons down the road your better off with a modified 2015 turbo such as the streetmax or the H&S kit.
So I have watched a Ford Tech on Youtube do the removal and install of the turbo on a 6.7. The heck with that!!! I deleted my truck no issues.. I can tear Harleys apart all day long but no way am I replacing a turbo. So if I blow my turbo one day and show up with a 2012 asking to swap to a 2015 turbo would Ford actually do it? I could imagine they would struggle with the 2012 truck and a 2015 turbo ideal.. like will it work. But if I was paying cash.. would they do it?
I'd hate to know how many hours they will charge you lol. I know I saved atleast $1000 doing it myself....
