Need to do EGR delete on the road!

A buddy of mine is on vacation and is having over heating issues with his truck, 06 CCLB 6.0h no. I believe its at 140k and has not had any thing done to it other than the typ service. Probably no coolant flushes either.

He's feels like he is going to need to do an egr delete and oil cooler before he heads home. He is mechanical and is with his dad who is awesome with wrenching as well.

My question is the "required" programmer that the sites say you have to use on 06-07 models. Is this needed to run the truck or just to keep the CEL off?

Thanks

I ran my 06 with a delete and no tunes for a month. It threw a CEL but that's about it. I think it also disabled the fan though

It will just throw a code if he doesn't use a programmer that can turn the egr system off. If he is having overheating problems I would be guessing that the egr cooler is cracked, He should delete the egr cooler, replace the oil cooler, and to a cooling system pressure test on it to varify his head gaskets aren't blown. Also would be a good idea to get a new coolant cap before trying to test the cooling system. Sucks this happened on vacation. Good luck.
