I noticed oil seeping out on the top rear side of the oil pan, the. I saw for sure oil seeping and collecting slowly around the drain plug, just can't tell if that slow leak is spillin up and making the oan look like its leaking too.
Anyone have similar issue?
Thanks!
not really likely. unless that's magic oil. you running magic oil?
not saying it's the pan seal here, but i don't believe ford sells the plastic pan/seal anymore. may need to go with the metal.
if it is, in fact, the pan
The magic oil burned off after about 36,000 miles...
Trac Bar
Water Pump
Tranny Solenoids
Fuel injector clamp
Power Mirror
Power Lock
And now it looks like the pan too
Just waiting on radiator, turbo, and or glow plug to go next at around 50k on my 2011
Somewhat of an update. I appear to be getting more oil around the pan bolts than where the lower pan meets the upper. I'm wondering if they werent torqued down right at the factory or if somehow the plastic pan has warped to allow seepage down the bolts....next time I have to change oil I'm gonna see about getting the metal pan and a new gasket....
I had the same thing before on mine. It was residual oil from around the drain plug, and yes, it must have been "magic" because it spread upwards towards the base of the pan. I guessing a combo of vibration and airflow under the truck while running on the highway...? Almost ordered and replace the plastic pan with the metal one, until I cleaned it real well with a pressure washer and degreaser and continued to check. Usually notice it right after oil changes if I don't clean the drain really well with shop towels. But again, mine was 100% from around the drain plug
crazy. i'd still prefer the metal pan, as it doesn't use an o ring to seal. can't see that seal lasting very long. maybe ford sells just the o ring. or you could try and match it up. or see if you can get anothere plug. though it may be discontinued. but yea, i guess it is possible with the velocity of air under there
Thank you! For all the good info on the pans and posting the experiences youve had.
I will save my $100 for now and give it a good cleaning and maybe just a new plug...
Thanks!!
I have an early build also (01/11)..started with a mist around 45k and gradually progressed into a nuisance leak between 70 and 75k. Lots of discussion everywhere about this problem. Bottom line is that it doesn't hAve the longevity compared to a conventional or cast pan. Hence they had to change it. I personally went with a driven diesel replacement pan. More expensive but I don't plan on trading or selling..excellent design and no more leak! But the new Ford metal pan wold be just as effective and at a lower cost. Either way, get rid of the composite pan and crappie plug! Nothing but a headache!
Thank you. I've been meaning to update....it does appear to be the pan or the seal....I guess the composite pans are warping to cause the leak? Mine is starting to leak again on the back end. Not the plug for sure...
With your new pan did u have to ads sealant to the gasket? How much money are we talking about?
The pan from strictly diesel runs $299.
Great quality part but is on the high side. I priced the Ford steel replacement from Rudy's diesel at $119. And both will use sealant going back on. Install is easy for either of them. Since I installed the Strictly Diesel pan ..zero leaks! Photos of both are below.
