I'm installing a 2 1/2" Top Gun Customz front/rear kit on my truck and I can't decide between these two sizes. Which would you choose and why? The tires I'm going with are Trail Grapplers.
For me the choice was simple. First, the 35x12.50s don't have the needed load capacity for my cabover camper. If you use your truck as a truck you will find the 35 x 12.50s don't have the weight capacity. They also don't take 80 psi, which means increased sway when towing/hauling. Second, most 12.50" wide tires are not rated to go on the the OEM 20" wheels (too wide of tire on too narrow of a rim). Third, the 295s are a bit taller and better fill out the fender wells on my leveled truck.
Thanks for the reply and those are all good points. Another thing I am thinking about is the rubbing. In order for me to get into my garage I have to turn lock to lock and I've read the 12.50s will rub the radius arms which is not something I really want to deal with.
Thanks for the reply. Are those Open Country AT2s? I've been looking at them a lot the past couple days. How is the ride and can you tell any difference as far as power loss?
yeah they are toyo at 2s, they ride very well i do a lot of driving on the interstate so far they have been wearing good to,as of loss of power i don't think so i wouldn't know what the power difference is i only had my stock tires for about 60 miles, as soon i bought my truck i took it the next day to get all that done
I went with Toyo at2 295/65/20 because they only weigh a couple pounds more than the stock tire, the tow rating, and the air pressure rating won't set off the tpms... Oh and Toyo's website says the measurement is 35.1 as where nittos 295/65/20 is 35.6
Thanks for the replies. I'm ordering the AT2s in 295/65/20. I also decided on the Carli leveling kit with rear blocks for now. Maybe I'll upgrade to the mini packs in the future. Can't wait to get it all on!
Just wanted to say make sure you check the load ratings for the tires. I recently was looking at new tires, and was thinking of going to a 295 65 20 instead of the stock 275, and the 295 had a lower load rating, about 600-700lbs, and another rating that was also lowered, whereas the 35 was 300lbs more than stock.
What tire were you looking at that had a lower load rating in 295/65/20 than in 275/65/20? I have never seen a tire in 295/65/20 that isn't a 4,080 lb load capacity (load index 129), whereas 275/65/20s have a load capacity of 3,750 (load index 126). No flotation size tire in a 20" wheel diameter has a load index of 129 (or greater).
I was mistaken, the tire I was talking about (Goodyear Duratrac) doesn't come in that size, but the 285 60 20 & 305 55 20 both have significantly lower load ratings and the overall size is smaller than the 275.
So, just curious... Does the 295/65/20 with a 00 to +18 (or so) offset require the truck to be leveled or will it work fine at stock front height...F350 that is...
The 20" OEM wheel is +44 offset and from what I've read a 295/65/20 AT tire barely clears at full lock. I wouldn't go below a +18 unless you plan on doing a leveling kit, and even at that you might rub. I don't have any personal experience as my F-250 is fairly new and tiring shopping myself, but I've researched quite a few threads. Hope this helps
I thought that + offset pulled the tire in farther? wouldn't an offset lower then +18 push the tire out farther creating more clearance? or am i backwards?
I also did alot of research and went with the 295/60/20 for the same reason. I did choose to go with the Nitto for the extra half inch of height. I also like the fact that the 295/60 doesn't stick out as much as the 35/12.5/20's. the 295 really is a perfect fit for a truck with a leveling kit to fill out the wheel wells, and still have the tire rating needed to tow or haul anything substantial.
Truck looks awesome! I'm getting a BDS 2 inch leveling kit but I'm torn between 295/65/20 and the 35x12.5x20. I am looking at the cooper stt pros for both tires. Do you have a leveling kit on your truck? any rubbing issues with the 295?
No rubbing issues at all and it could have been fine without the leveling kit. I chose to add a ProComp leveling kit anyway and I raised the rear of the truck with factory F350 Blocks and U bolts which are about 1 3/4 taller than the factory F-250 blocks because I did not want the truck to be exactly level or slightly higher in the front so I could keep a slight rake forward.
So I'm confused... You posted a pic of a black F350, yet are saying you raised the rear with factory F350 blocks and u-bolts....which would imply an F250...
Hey, not to be a bother but do you have more pics of your truck on the 295's? I have yet to make a decision still but I like the look of them. If I have a 350, you think I can get away with using the stock rims and no leveling kit with these tires? Thanks
Honestly each tire company size differs even though technically they are the "same size". I found this website and it gives you exact dimensions of the tire you are looking at. https://tiresize.com/calculator/
some 295'S may fit fine while others wont. I know Nittos are wider than most of the other tires
I will likely look at the Toyo. basically they should be about 1" taller and 1" wider. I think i should be able to clear that without a lift. i dont want to mess with a leveling kit.
I am in the same boat as you and also looking at the toyo open country AT 2. They are 35.1 inches high and 11.8 wide. I think the stock Michelin is 11 inches wide and 34.4 high. Hope this helps!
Interested in how this turns out. I'll probably go through the upcoming winter with my current tires. I'm planning on 295/75/20 on factory wheels and no more than a 2" leveling kit in the front.
The only time it rubs is at full lock and flexing just right. For instance full lock to do a U turn on flat ground doesn't rub at all. Full lock pulling into my driveway with a small incline rubs very slightly.
How tall is your truck at the cab lights ?
Thanks a lot. Been searching for this info if you could help I'd appreciate it.
