2008 started the new tailgates. You can get one with a step. The camera is built into the handle. If your truck didn't come with one you will need to do some wiring. I did this on my 2000. Added the '08 tailgate and rear view mirror w/ video screen.

 

I have the mirror on my 2011. So the 2008 looks exactly and works exactly the same?

 

They should. Did your '11 have the camera in the handle? If so, you should be able to get a new camera and plug it in.

 

Yep, 08-up are identical.

 

It did have the camera. So I guess the step and pole were all available from 08 and up as well? Also the plastic molding on the tailgate is all the same?

It is ALL the same. I have an 08 gate on my 05 with the step, the grab bar, and camera.

You wouldn't know the difference between the 08 gate and an 11 gate.

 

Ended up with a 2010. It's at the paint shop now also getting new molding and bedlining the pole. Thanks for the help ya'll.

Did your missing tail gate come with a lock on the handle? Was it locked?

 

Might want to get one of these.

It puts a lock on the hinge mechinism so it makes it harder to be stolen at least. 20 bucks to possibly not be going through your current hassle

 

It did have a lock, but this being my first truck, I didn't lock it.

Some GED kid with a temp license just ran me off the road today. All this **** inside of ****ing 2300 miles.

 

thanks for the tip. I think I am just gonna weld a piece of steel around the cam. Same concept but permanent. I won't need to remove my tailgate ever.

 

Will a handle with camera fit into a tailgate that did not have the handle with camera?

 

Yes it will fit perfectly. The only difference is the mold is a little different to recieve the "eye" into the handle:thumb:

 

I always put a hose clamp around the open end of the tailgate hinge. It's cheap, easy, reversible, and makes it much harder to steal unless they have plenty of time and tools.
