Tailgate Plastic protector

Could someone please tell me the proper procedure for removing the protective cap off of my tailgate without breaking the clips, so that I can paint my tailgate.

If you are taking about the cap on the top I can't tell you, but I did mess up the one on the inside and just pulled it off. There were some round plugs and I pulled them out. They were a bit tore up but reusable.

If its a step tailgate pull out the step and use some needle nose pliers to squeeze the retainer clips and carefully pull it off. If its not a step tailgate, then you can't obviously get to the clip to squeeze it so you'll just have to get a new plastic cap, or use a 3m adhesive to glue it back on.

I ripped mine off after my 4 wheeler slid off the loading ramps and the 2" ball lodged in one of the holes in ramp, drove out from underneath it all...reinstalled the plastic cap with small self tappers

My tailgate does not have a step (Wish it did) I am changing the color and really did not want to just tape it off. I guess gluing it back on is a option.
Thanks

Check with tousley ford and see how much a new one is, they're Ike of the cheapest dealers around, and look on eBay for a new one too
