how to replace towing mirror 2011 F350

I'm certain there's a boatload of people on here that already know all this but I didn't find too much easy info doing some quick google searches so I thought I'd post this. I had to replace the right side towing mirror, worst part was buying the replacement...1700 for a new mirror from the dealer, so I did a search on CarParts.com and paid 650 for a perfectly fine used mirror.
Here's the procedure I used. Tools: small flat head screwdriver, sockets with extension...think the sockets were 7mm and 8mm..can't recall now.
1. roll down the window, you'll need it open or have an assistant. I did it solo, wasn't difficult.
2. Remove corner triangle covering. Using a flat head screw driver, gently pop off the triangle cover in the corner - the 4 bolts are behind those rubber circular gaskets/covers, there is also a strip of tape you'll need to peel back to get at the two bolts on the right hand side as you are looking at it. Don't unscrew the bolts yet.
3. Remove window/lock control panel. Using a flat head screw driver gently pop off the panel covering the window and lock control, it'll come off with some prying, just go easy to avoid damage.
4. Disconnect the two wiring harnesses, don't do it in cold as the clip attachments can get brittle.
5. Remove entire door panel: Unscrew the two screws at the bottom of the door panel, these screws are exposed, you'll be able to see them. On the door panel below the armrest/door handle area, there is a small covering/panel, it's about 1"x2.5"..3"??, gently pop it off with a flathead. there are two screws now visible, remove those. The door panel is now free to be lifted straight up and out off the door frame. Once you get it off you'll see how it was held in place at the bottom of the panel, there are about 4 plastic hooks that anchor it in addition to the 4 screws you just removed. Helps to have the lock down when you are re-installing the panel.
6. Unclip the mirror control wiring harness (for those with powered/heated mirrors), it takes some wiggling but don't force it.
7. Tie a length of string to assist in fishing the new wiring harness back
8. Unbolt the 4 screws behind the mirror, and pull the old mirror off, pulling out the wiring as well, cut the string, toss old mirror. Here's where having an assistant is nice or have the window done to start.
9. Using the string, pull the wiring harness through and hook it up. Reverse the steps and you're done.

Right side towing mirror on my 2011 F250 Lariat 6.7 diesel just quit working. Only 68,000 miles on the truck but of course it is out of warranty. Dealer wants $2500 (parts and labor) to replace. This is beyond insulting for what is probably a stripped cheap plastic gear that costs Ford less than $1.00 to buy from China. Dealer says they can't replace parts -- I have to replace the entire mirror assembly. Who in Ford management makes decisions like this for a work truck?

This is the last straw for me. I'm tired of the 26 gallon fuel tank, the crappy Synch system, $200 map navigation updates, DEF heater failure, sagging rear end, bad OEM shocks, door panel plastic color rubbing off, plus worrying everyday that I'm going to experience a glow plug or valve failure.

I use my Ford Super Duty to tow a travel trailer. Many of my trailering friends have switched from Ford to Ram over the past two years and seem quite happy with the Cummins engine. My Chevy/GMC 2500 friends also seem delighted with their Duramax/Allison power trains. My plan was to buy a 2018 Ford Super Duty with the 6.7 diesel to give Ford a year to work any issues with the new 2017's. The $2500 bill to fix a stripped gear in a mirror was the last kick in the teeth for me. After 30 years as a loyal Ford owner, it is time to head to the Chevy and Ram dealerships to kick the tires. The only good thing about this incident is I'll be getting a new truck this year instead of next. And it won't have a blue oval.
