JL Tw5 doesnt impress me?

Hey guys.. I have recently installed a JL Cleansweep, 13tw5, and a Alpine pdx 1.600 amp. The box was built by myself which I should have got a box from spl2k but I tried and think I did a good job. But Im not totally impressed with the bass and the way it sounds and hits. The box is around .9ft and sealed properly. I have the amp set at around 3/4 gain and bass on the h/u is set all the way down.. When I turn it up it sounds distorted or something. I am pretty certain that I connected everything correctly and calibrated the cleansweep right.... Just after reading all the reviews from others I expected it to surprise me and be amazing... but..... not.... any tips?

Play with the settings one at a time. Turn the gain down to 1/2 and the bass to nothing then start turning up the bass setting on the H/U one unit at a time. If you notice an improvement, then move on to the gain. Make sure you have the crossover set to 80hz cutoff max. I found that setting the bass to the lowest setting didn't sound good. One or two clicks up was the sweet spot to keep the door speakers from making awkward noises (bass they can't reproduce well).

there is no reason you couldn't build the same or better box than spl2k

I had that notion also and even though I have made all my own boxes I sprung for his

I also had a 30 dollar used box I got off of craigs that had made in the usa on it
hard to tell them apart

I was unimpressed with the single 12 spl ported so i worked the other box a little to sit on the other side of the spl box and now I have a non ported full throw 10 and a ported shallow 12 using 2 different amps and it sounds much better now

far to much work on my part I should have done my own for 1/3 the cost

I have the spl2k box also. When I first got everything hooked up, I wasn't happy either. First I'm running the 500/1 amp. There is more settings on the back that most amps I've ever had didn't have. So it took a lot of tuning to get it right. I also had a bad amp! After much monkeying around mine sounds very good. If you post a pic of the back of your amp, I'll compare my settings to yours. But initially I was having the same issues you are.
