AC Compressor Toast and Metal in AC System?

AC went to blowing only hot. Compressor was not kicking on and come to find out the "relay" (?) that kicks it on is fried and the gap is too big for the circuit to complete. Add to that the dealer says the compressor is history and there is "metal in the cooling system" that needs to be flushed.... or better yet, replace all the components with new ones. This is not under warranty (by 6k miles) and the dealer wants $1,500 to do the job.

I've looked up compressors and the entire parts list for the OEM compressor and all the components, hoses, etc. is only $350 from many places. Is this really over $1k in labor? Does the freaking cab need to come off or something for this? How hard would it be to do the job myself?

Any input is appreciated!

You'd just need a new compressor, hoses are a good idea, condensor, and a good flush of the system. There should be a filter in one of the hoses can't remember which one which should prevent metal going into the evaporator core.

But you'd have to make sure it gets a very good flush and at least a replacement of those listed items. As far as cost I'm not sure how much labor it is.
