2008 job 1 f350 srw cc

Hi guys , im new to diesels so id appreciate any help. i went on a camping trip this weekend towing a small older travel trailer. Its only 18ft and around 3500 lbs loaded up. It is also around 30 c outside whatever that is in f, but pretty hot. Anyways, drove about 40 miles and a wrench appeared on the dash. No difference in power, sound or anything, just looked down and it was there kind of thing. Pulled into next town to use bank and shut it down. started truck and drove another 70 or 80 miles and no wrench. today drove around 30 miles and it came on again. shut it off, it went off and drove another 10 miles or so and it came back on and all the way home. nothing runs out of the ordinary though. it only seems to do it when it tow the trailer. i just took it out and it wouldnt do it, although the "cleaning exhaust" message came on for the first time since i had it. i noticed the engine fan seems like its loud but its supposed to be working when its so hot, isnt it? i will have to get it scanned. seems weird ive been driving all over and the only time it got the wrench was when towing this weekend not before or after.
