New Steering Gearbox Help
Hey all! Been forever since I've been on here. I am looking for a tip that I am sure someone must know of. I tried searching for it myself on here and found nothing.
I replaced my steering gearbox Friday due to lot's a leaking and play. The hardest part was removing the pitman arm from the drag link. I did indeed have a puller, but the problem was that there is so little space to get a wrench in there I could barely apply enough torque to get it popped off. Took me almost 6 hours hours just to get the pitman arm off the drag link. I let it soak with PB Blaster for 3 days before I thought about touching it. Wasn't for a lack of proper tools and lube. So tell me, how do you all do it? |

If you're talking about separating the drag link from the pitman arm I just loosen the nut and hit the end of the pitman arm with a big hammer. The idea is to flex hole so that the tapered rod end pops out. Drive straight on the end of the arm towards the box. One or two solid shots and it'll pop right off. This technique works on any tapered joint from tie rods to ball joints.
If you're talking about removing the pitman arm from the box then I usually pull that once the box is out of the truck. |
