intermitant check engine light, and no power above 2500 rpm

Well truck is an 2008 F250 has just over 100,000 on it, it is at 104,000 miles and the check engine light will come on and stay on for a day and the next it goes out then back on when it wants to and back off. also the truck runs great untill 2500 rpm then it falls on its face like it defuels it self. but it doesnt do this only when the check engine light is on. some times it does when the light is on and some times it runs great when the light is on. and some times when the light is off it still does it and some times it doesnt. no smoke from the exhaust or any thing. any one have any ideas what might be wrong?

Also is there a way to check for trouble codes with out a scanner, i know newer dodges you can turn the key to run and then back off 3 times and they are displayed on the odometer, is there a way to on the fords?

Well, it can be a number of things really. If it were me, I'd start with the fuel system first, i.e. filters, waterseperater, injectors, etc. As far as the codes are concerned, if you dont have a reader just go to a autozone or something like that when the check engine light is on. They do it for free!!
It could be as simple as a bad filter or a bad sensor, or... god forbid something expensive... you really need the codes.

good luck,

Dom
