This is a new engine there are GOING TO BE PROBLEMS with this. The problems are much less than the 6.0 had so don't complain. The fuel mileage thing is because the emissions resriction went up (or down depending on how you look at it). Aparently to the government its better to burn more fuel with lower emmisions than less fuel with more emmisions.

I haven't been on the forum much this summer so this problem may have already been addressed on here somewhere if it has happened to someone but I was wondering if any of you 6.4 owners have experienced any fuel system failures? I ran into a guy in Advance the other day and we were talking Powerstrokes and he told me that he bought an 08 PSD and it has been in the shop for most of the entire month that he has owned it Said the tech told him that the entire fuel system had failed. Something to do with the common rail side of it, no specifics. Anybody have this problem?

I just got a 08 f-550 and it runs around at 16500 lbs all the time, I don't have any complaints about power, although the milage is bad, but I can't really expect good milage travelling at that weight. My buddy just bought a brand new Dodge 3500 with the 6.7 Cummins, and guess what, he is getting around 9 mpg as well, so it isn't just Powerstrokes that use fuel!

6.4 with no power!!
I have been nothing but a ford diesel guy my whole time of owning vehicles. I had great luck with them until my 04 6.0, I fixed that problem by buying a new '05. My family and I have logged about 1,700,000 miles on 6.9's through the 7.3 powerstrokes, with great luck. My'05 6.0 was a pullin dude with reasonably good milage, wish I could say the same for my new 6.4! I pull hard with my trucks, thats what makes my living, and I know exactly what my trucks can do with my trailers on certain hills. I have had the same trailers for years, 32' and 40' tandem dual trailers. I am pretty confident that not too many other guys gross any more weight than I do. My truck and 40' gross right around 16000 EMPTY, then I load them. I am not going to put down my gross weights loaded so as not to be chastised. My 7.3s handled these loads with ease never getting less than 7.5 mpg., the 6.0's handled the loads well but could get as low as 4 mpg., my new 6.4 is about 10 to 15 mph slower than the 7.3's and all they had were straight pipes! I just got my 6.4 out of the shop today for a new radiator that developed a split. I have been complaining about the power and they can't find anything wrong, but the service advisor is great and I am bringing it in with a trailer in the morning, to see if anything shows up on their computer while pulling. I think it is a good engine, more refined than the rough running 6.0's, SMOOTH is a good word to describe it. It gets decent milage, I have seen it get 5.0mpg. though, empty I can feather it along and get 17-18. I love the truck, it handles and rides great, and I am still a firm believer that Ford builds the toughest truck, bar none! I really hope that mine is an exception and everybodyelse has good power, I just know mine is weak because I have kept accurate records on what all my trucks can do with these trailers on certain hills. I will let you know what happens with my dealer tomorrow. If anyone else has similar power problems let me know please! Thanks.

I took delivery of my 08 F350 DRW Crew Cab today and lucky for me it seems to have twice the power as the 08 I test before I ordered mine. As far as no the bad mileage issue I'm hearing about, my 04 PSD has had few problems but the mileage has been about 12 empty on the highway and 6-8 towing. I doubt it'l be much worse with the 08. I'm anxious to try the 08 with 17000 lbs in tow... |

I know 2 other people besides myself who have purchesed a 2008 ford diesel truck and will never buy another ford truck again. I have previously owned 4 ford diesel trucks, this one by far has the worse mpg ever. I went from a 2005 f-250 6.0L (at 17 mpg) to the 08 f-250 6.4L (Same truck) now getting 7.8 mpg. Contacted ford and all they can say is that it "meets the requirements, sorry you bought it you own it".We can put a man on the moon but we cant get better gas mileage from year to year. WTH! So called sales person at the dealership said "yeah this truck gets the same MPG" This is how ford wants to treat there costumers? Well when they go bankrupt they have no one to blame but themselves. Poor products, poor sales people and poor costumer service. Big thumbs down for ford!!!!

I have a 99 F350 SD DRW with 240,000 on it. I bought it with 210,000 and have been dumping money in it ever since: all ball joints, rotors, calipers and pads, belt tensioner, tire after tire (general tires new were separating), new tranny because of a casting defect in the original, now two new batteries, battery light is still on and I'll probably have to change the alternator. I'm sure I've forgotten a couple of repairs. It's a strong puller (heaviest pull so far was 6500 lbs, wow) and gets decent mileage. I haven't fixed the same part twice but do fix one after another. I'm getting fed up with replacing/repairing stuff on this truck. I had considered getting a newer one and thought I'd rationalize it by saving money in repairs; doesn't sound like it. Guess I should go back to Chevy. I love the truck, hate the repairs! Just my $.02

Well, I just returned from 2700 miles towing an enclosed trailer weighing about 7000 lbs. Lots of 80 mph on the interstate and I love my 6.4 PSD. And I love about everything else about the new truck. With only 3200 miles total on the truck its too early to know what problems might show up but it gets about the same mileage as my 04 6.0 got and the performance is far better. This engine is far more responsive than my 6.0 was. And on the hills in Wyoming I had a DMAX pass me on every down grade pulling an empty trailer but with the cruise set I went back by it on every upgrade. I'm hoping Ford had time to correct most of the early issues with the 6.4 With the problems I had with my 04 and the lack of support from Ford Motor Company I had swore I'd never own another. So far I'm glad I gave them another chance. Time and miles will tell. |

Hey all, I'm new to deisels and only 2 payments into my 08 with less than 4K on it. I've made one run to ohio from DC and I got WAY more miles on 25 gal of fuel than my 5.4 F-150 would down hill with a tail wind. I'm making the run again this weekend (with out additive) and will actualy track the MPG.
