DPF codes with aftermarket intakes

OK....so we all know that it invariably happens, but does anyone have a clue as to WHY installing an aftermarket intake throws DPF codes? I just can't wrap my head around an intake causing an exhaust problem.

I dont know either but wish i did. I have afe and it threw codes at first but with updated tune revisions from SCT it does not anymore. However i still do not think the truck performs correctly with it. it smokes a noticible amount more and boost pressures sometimes are a few lbs less than with stock intake. the truck actually runs equal or a tad better with stock intake. i just put it back on yesterday. i desperately want the afe to work good but it seems to be different with each truck. a lot of guys run it with no problems.

some of the early 6.0 with afe intake did this as well, would give a p0401 code in system, which is an egr code but would do it , the 6.4 ones ive dealt with were dpf code , (cant remember code ), from my experience , its only afe that does it , why i wish i knew but it does , the biggest thing is , with most of these trucks , the factory air box feeds enough air to supply all that is needed , so an aftermarket one isnt a have to in alot of cases

I recently installed the afe on my otherwise stock truck and then put about 1500 miles on it with no problems to date.

its not every truck that does , thats whats so strange about it , its just a select few that ive seen do this , but the only common denominator was the afe

It has to do with the way the diagnostics are run and it depends on the strategy of the truck. With the aftermarket intakes, the mass flow readings are slightly different which, on some trucks, cause the codes to appear.

Cool More than just AFE...

It's P2002 and it happens with the S&B and Banks Ram Air too. I have had both and got the codes with both. S&B told me that the MAF tolerance is very tight with our 6.4 DPF units and an aftermarket intake gives them just enough additional air to trip the codes. It must be right on the hairy edge though because some guys don't get them. I sent the S&B back because it was happening every 200-250 miles to mine. I put the Banks on and it only happens every 1800-2000 miles - they are working on a new intake tube the changes the position/angle of the MAF and "SHOULD" resolve the problem. We'll see...
