high egt's at Idle or casual driving

Quite often while idiling or city driving (no load) my egt's will hover around
900, then suddenly drop down to 400 then back up to 900. Does anybody know why this is happening? Faulty temp. sensor? EBPV sticking? P.S. the sensor is mounted inside the driver's side exhaust manifold.

My truck is almost identical to yours, and I never see over 900 unless I jump on it pretty good. 400 sounds about right for city and idle. My probe is in the same location too so I would have to guess there is a gauge or probe problem. Is the motor reacting when it jumps like that like its dumping a whole crap load of fuel in the motor? IF not its some part of the gauge assembly.
