Looking for some upgrades!

I am looking to purchase my first Diesel and I'm planning on a 6.4 Liter, either an 08 or 09. I'm curious as to what performance parts I could put on it to raise the horsepower, MPG, and in general, bad assness of the truck. Any and all suggestions would be helpful, I've read through quite a bit of posts and don't have a clue as to what most the parts are but I'm very mechanically inclined when it comes to almost any engine out there. I have a few months before I rotate back to the world and then a few more before I most likely find a good deal on a truck.

Welcome! Read through these forums and use the search button as well. Thousands of threads on here with great info.
Simple answer is: tuner, intake, exhaust. Delete the emissions crap with tuner and exhaust and enjoy. Check Rudy's Diesel website or Performance Truck Products | DPF Delete Kits & Diesel Performance Parts from MBRP, H&S, EDGE, Diamond Eye, BANKS, Bully Dog

I've been reading as to deleting the DPF and the EGR. I have no idea as to what the EGR would do for the performance when done all by it's lone some. I heard that deleting the DPF will help increase the MPGs as well as HP when combined with a Tuner.

And FYI, please feel free to explain this like you're talking to a kid as this will be the first diesel I ever own or worked on. Sadly my brother is a Diesel Mechanic and very reliable but with minimal patience.

My brother keeps saying I should get a Dodge Cummins but I don't want to deal with Transmission problems.

Deleting the egr is not really for performance but to keep from putting sooty exhaust back into your engine and with the egr coolers gone they cant rupture and leak possibly hydrolocking the engine by filling the cylinders ( number 8 I think) with coolant.

These 6.4L motors are crazy powerful, but are factory tuned way down and with all the emissions crap the motor can't breath like it needs to. So simply tuning will unleash the hidden power (safely) from the motor, getting rid of the DPF/DOC (cat like gas trucks have) will allow unrestrictive exhaust flow and a upgraded intake flows better air in. These 3 mods we not only increase power/torque but improve mpg and the life of the motor. I saw a guy on here that kept his truck stock and at 100,000 miles his motor was f'ed up due to the factory regen cycle. Deleting the EGR like said above is jut to get rid of a known failure item that's only there because of emissions BS from the EPA. Serves no other purpose.

So what is the stock HP? And what tune would get me up to around 500 HP as I don't want to mess with getting the Transmission rebuilt to handle the extra HP. I was thinking a Stage 2 intake, DPF/EGR Delete, with a tuner. Not sure of the best tuner out there since I will want to set it up for good HP and good gas mileage.

Stock hp is 350. Intake tuner and exhaust with the deletes and 500 hp will be no problem.
