Egr delete questions for California use.
I want to do a egr delete. I ordered my minimaxx today and want to get this done ASAP. But first I want to understand how this all works before I start removing/mod things. So please fill me in or clarify if I'm missing something.
1. Egr delete happens thru minimaxx. 2. Egr block off happens thru plates installed in cooler line into egr. 3. Egr failure happens because oil cooler fails to cool egr. (Is this true in the 6.4?) 4. Engine failure occurs after egr failure due to coolant pumped into intake. 5. If I leave the original egr intake (smog inspection purpose) with block off plates it should be ok unless the inspector knows what to look for. Also hide the minimaxx when taking it in. Have I got it right? Now the Dpf, I plan on taking that on and off every other year. Price I have to pay for living in Cali. |

Egr delete questions for California use.
I'm in the same boat you are. I'm looking to but a tuner but it really sucks living in Cali.

From what I understand this is how it works. I just received my H&S Mini Max and cat/DPF delete but I have not installed it yet. Bad weather here.
Here is the the way I understand it. 1. The Mini Max turns off the EGR valve when running at speed. At idle the EGR valve will open and let exhaust into the intake manifold. 2. Yes the EGR block plates will block off exhaust from entering intake manifold. 3. No the EGR coolers are cooled by engine coolant (antifreeze). The EGR coolers crack from heat stress and let coolant into the cylinders from the intake. 4. Right! 5. Can't answer this one. I don't know what they look for in California smog check. Hope this helps. |

Egr delete questions for California use.
I've heard of people hollowing out there DPF so it's still there for looks. But if the person happens to know what a stock 6.4 sounds like then you might be ****ed lol. I also know a guy who lives in Cali. He drives a 5.9 cummins that's straight piped and has a programmer. And he said every year when he gets smog checked that he brings a 6 pack with him and he's fine. Not sure if its true or not. But I know he doesn't have a stock exhaust for it.

So are the block off plates to prevent the coolant from going into the exhaust coolers, or blocking the hot exhaust from going into the coolers? Or both. I was under impression the gasses are stopped by the egr staying shut (done with tuner), and the plugs stop the coolant from going into the egr coolers.

The tuner just stops the EGR valve from opening and letting exhaust into the intake of the engine. |

The tuner, depending on the tuner and/or tunes, disables the valve completely or allows it to cycle at idle. It also prevents the PCM from throwing any EGR related codes which allows the end user to remove the EGR's completely with a EGR delete. Sent from my LTEVO using AutoGuide app. |

I live in CA and I can tell you that if you take your truck into a place owned/worked by anyone else other than Officer Farva, you'll be fine. My 1st smog inspection i passed with a 4" dp back delete. No cat, no dpf, not even a muffler. Since then Ive gone "stealth" with my delete. But there would be no concern with me doing an egr if I wanted.
Don't be scared of Farva. |
