another exhaust question,

sorry if this has been covered before, I cant seem to answer my question with reading the past post, 2 hours and nothing so i will ask

1. I was thinking 4 or 5 but reading most are happy with 4 but would now like 5, so Im going 5

2. new down pipe. It shows no HP gain so ill keep my stock one it looks like unless someone can give me a good reason to change it out. Im good if it will help me.

3. now my question is muffler or no muffler? I see a few kits some with hole shot straight threw design, seem to be 4.5 reduction on the ID of the exhaust. 5 in 4.5 internal and 5 out. Im guessing this is not a big deal because the down pipe is smaller.

I also see some muffler kits have a spiral internal of the muffler. does anyone know if this is a restriction?

4. For everyone who had 5 do you run a muffler of not? if not is it loud? or do you have any first had knowledge of a side by side comparison . thanks

any input on the 5 will help

Go with 5". I would suggest new DP after seeing mine. Check out the link in my thread. A few pages in I have a picture of my DP cut. It's way restrictive.

Can't help on the muffler. I run a straight pipe and it's not loud at all. Muffler might get rid of some of the whistle at idle. I might get one eventually.

I have a link somewhere to a video of my straight pipe exhaust in a thread I started.

Honestly it's not loud. I can have easy conversations next to my exhaust pipe with people and it didn't change anything when driving down the road.

The 6.4 isn't very loud straight piped. 5" will give it a deeper tone but without a muffler it's half as loud as a 6.0. If you still have warranty, keep the down pipe the way it is. If your out of warranty and can handle cutting the down pipe, go for it.

Like travisH3 said the 6.4 isn't that loud straight, but more of just air sound like a hair dryer. Def 5" for exhaust and if your in warranty keep stock down pipe or it will just be another excuse for Ford to deny your warranty!

No warrantee problems, So it looks like ill be doing the down pipe as well, When i was doing my DPF delete i did notice a crimp in the DP , so adding the 4” DP cant hurt. So im going to go with the 4” DP and 5” system with no muffler.

Thanks for everyones help.

I was thinking of pulling the can and doing the EGR delete and DP at the same time, But looks like i can do it with out removing the cab,

I have a 4" dp and a 5" exhaust no muffler. Its not loud at all. If you do the 4" DP and 3" IC tube, you will reduce your egt's. I put the 3" IC tube, 4" DP, and EGR delete on all at separate times so I could see the EGT reduction with each. The High Flow intake on the EGR delete didnt drop EGT's, but the IC tube and 4" DP dropped EGT's. All together it dropped them about 125 degrees at WOT. I have heard a few 6.4's with 5" exhausts with mufflers and I will say that if you are going to do a muffler, do an aeroturbine. It didnt make the truck quieter, but the exhaust note is nice. Nice deep sound no whistle. I like my whistle so I run with out.

thats good news , I also have the IC tube as well, I was going to make one myself with all the extra turbo pipe i have laying around in my shop, but the one i got was ready, no test fit and re welding, it will make the install easy,

now that we are talking about this, i was pondering the idea of adding the egr delete elbow or the elbow with BOV, I read that its not needed but 40 psi is a lot not to blow off. I can hear my turbo when i let off the gas at WOT, it was not happy,

also thinking the need for a better flowing IC. and if its worth the 1100-1500$ investment. i would rather spend the money on performance parts this will give me the biggest Bang for the $$$$

what do you think about that? any insight on that?

I just went with the elbow no BOV because I didnt see the need. I understand what your saying though, if you go from WOT to none, the turbo is going to bark. If I was racing all of the time, I would probably do one, but for DD, and towing operations I passed.

You will see the largest drop in EGT's from an aftermarket IC. I had a spearco on my last truck (2000 7.3). It was great. I havent put one on this truck because from what Ive read, it is a really tight fit. If you are just DD your truck and rarely tow, I dont think you will see the benefit of the IC. If you tow and or Race alot then the IC would be a worth while investment to try and shoe horn in the front.
