Diesel

After spending several hours doing some research on the EPA thing...I have to throw this out there. It generally takes a strong hand to get the EPA involved with any environmental issue as the enforcement efforts are applied at a state level. As an aside, I was Environmental Compliance Manager for a private firm for several years.

I hate to say this, but I suspect the big auto dealers may have a hand in this as they would have the HP to get EPA to engage on this subject. While I have not studied the sales figures, but the logic is pretty simple. The trucks generally will fail just past the warranty point. The consumer either spends the money to repair (which is where they make a ton of money on mark ups), or the guys that need a diesel will buy new. These systems effectively push back the return buyer by a factor of 2 or 3. I bought a used truck with 100K hoping to hit the 300-400 K mark. Why spend 60 on what can be had for 25? Government at its finest.....just my opinion.

Interesting point. My dealership/warranty experience:
Bought truck with 25k, also got warranty to 100k. In 1 years time, new radiator, in and out of dealership 4 times for white smoke and missing. 8-9 mpg(200-275 miles per tank), regens every 150 miles. Made about 2-4 quarts of oil between oil changes(5k). Truck drove like my 265k mile F150 I replaced but I trusted the F150 more.

To the shop 5x in 1 year.

At 36k, dpf fell off or was stolen or something like that- out of much frustration and concern. I haven't been to the dealership 1x in over 2 years and 50k miles.
My last several oil samples have each improved from the previous. Everything points to a very clean engine. Pretty sure my truck was going to be a disposable truck around 100k miles.
