How do tuners work???

First, let me say this is not a post against tuners. I am planning on getting the Mini Maxx and DPF/CAT delete very soon. But I am curious as to what a tuner changes in the truck to get the MPG/HP gains? How does it do it without damaging the motor and other components of the truck since the vehicle was designed (by people that get paid much more than me) to work within certain specs? If it is perfectly safe and so easy, why would the factory not do it, at least as an option? Again, not bashing performance tuners.

Depends on which tuner you speak of.

Most of the replace the stock program on the truck with another program

These other programs utilize different fuel mapping among other things as well as disable emissions equipment.

Disabling emissions equipment alone generates better fuel economy
