I was just about to ask this same question. I would like to pull my trans and drop it off at the rebuilder with a bunch of parts. I don't see myself getting past the 600 rwhp point.
What is needed to have a reliable trans at 550-600 hp? I was thinking a Suncoast converter and the Xtreme rebuild kit. Anything else? I figure I can get the converter and trans built for much cheaper than the Suncoast trans alone. Just no warranty... |

There have been 2 guys that come to my mind that have had issues with the trans rebuild kits, I think i remember there have been more as well. It seems that the fully built Suncoast, although pricey is a better investment....

Well that sucks to hear. I guess I would like to know a little more about the failures. If it was part or assembly issues. I have a very good shop local to me that builds some really high HP drag car stuff. Along with the trans in my 400hp rock racer. That thing holds up to hitting reverse at 6k rpms!!

If your going to do a built transmission, definitely go with SunCoast parts. As far as the build goes, who does it matters a lot. My SunCoast transmission was built in house at their facility in Fort Walton Beach, FL. Unless I put my transmission in the hands of a reputable 5R110W transmission builder, SunCoast would be doing the job.
For a rebuild, the best investment is the Super Duty Rebuild Kit that they offer. That kit and their torque converter is plenty to keep a 550-600 horsepower truck reliable for a long time. |
