locking hub problem, need advice

ok so the other day i tried to put my truck in 4 high, and it would not engage, so i decided to lock them manually and that works fine, now the problem is that if i leave the hubs locked manually I can still use the switch on the dash to go from 2 high to 4 high like normal and even 4 low. so i figured problem was solved and payed no further attention to it, and it has worked fine with the hubs in the locked position for months now.

but i had a guy today that was in a diesel tell me that he saw my hubs turning while driving and that they shouldn't if i was in 2 wheel drive.

so can anybody tell me what's going on. did i break something for the 4 high switch not to work with the hubs in the unlocked position?

Thanks
Brandon

Your hubs will always turn when you lock your hubs manually. That's the benefit to auto locking hubs, when you select 4th or 4lo the hubs lock automatically via a vacuum pump. If your hubs don't lock any more, unless you get out and turn the dial, then you prob have the seal for the hubs damaged and it needs to be replaced. Hope this helps. If you want your hubs not to turn for now unlock your hubs but you will only have 2wd. Have fun.

Pull a service book out and take a look. It's way to much to type and there a pain to change. I just lock my hubs if I think I might need to use 4hi or 4lo. Good luck.

Start simple. I would start by looking at the vacuum hoses first. May just be a loose or cracked hose. Good luck. Let us know what you find.
