Yes, the XRT is for downloading updates, uploading the tunes then either unplugging and safe storing or leaving plugged and selecting different tunes on the fly.

Casey from H&S says that they tunes are designed not to need an external gauge. Sounds like the XRT may be your best bet. Although, the new Mini Maxx is supposed to come out soon, which will have Trans Tuning which the XRT does not have.
I've got the SCT 9625OR right now, and I'm looking at the Mini Maxx as a replacement. Not for power, but just because SCT has left a bad taste in my mouth. It will have the same tunes as the H&S Black Maxx which includes a couple low power settings and some high.
Just something to consider....

Customer service. That is why I'm going to switch over to the H&S, because Casey seems to be lightyears ahead of them with customer service aspect alone. If you do go with the SCT, you'd be really better off getting something from Innovative, Eric seems to be a good guy. I don't want to get a poo flinging contest going on, so I'll leave it at that.
Not to mention, I've heard good things, and I don't want to necessarily spend the $$ for the Spartan or Black Maxx so the Mini Maxx is in my good range.

I have the 9625OR and other than the screen needing replacing I have had little issues. Matt from SCT has been great with me!! Something glitched on my truck and i was stuck with half stock tuning and half RCD tuning and i was locked out. I contacted SCT and within a couple days they had a rebuild file and re-wrote my TCM.

I rarely ever monitor my temps or anything. The RCD and most other tunes on the SCT dont get hot enough to really have any concerns over from what guys have been finding.
