There has been some steering stabilizer discussion lately and I figured i'd post up some shots of the kit Cobbs sells(Top Gun Customz) and your run of the mill skyjacker kit, along with my impressions of each.
Here are some pictures of the skyjacker kit. It has small bolts, flimsy brackets(that bent in just 28,000 miles), and the shocks were rusting and looked like ***. I can't blame this on the weather as live in a very dry climate(9-13" of rain a year)
This kit was a pain in the *** to install, everything had to measured and centered up, there was no guidance, no fitment to it.
On the other hand, the Top gun kit is very robust. The center bracket can only be installed in 1 place due to the bolts going through the diff cover. The outer brackets have the holes aligned for the angle of the steering arm where they mount. The u-bolts are much larger as is the thickness of the brackets. The install was a piece of cake. I had the old one off and the new one on with just hand tools in about 1 hr. Word of advice, do not drive without a stabilizer. The death wobble is amazing.
To compare the two isnt fair. the steering feel is vastly different, while the amount of steering effort required at low speeds is minimal with the Top Gun, it is very high with the skyjacker. I can't remember what I paid for the skyjacker, but 4WP has it advertised for ~150 and I paid $300 for the TGC. Its money well spent though.
I do have two tips for the guys at Top Gunz. 1, include some instructions, not everyo'ne knows what they are doing. 2, if you are going to market your shocks as
"Pictured is our kit paired with our exclusive Bilstein cylinders that have been made specific for this application. The manufacturer is making these to our specs and it now has it's own exclusive part numbers just for this application. "
Don't send me boxes of shocks with RCD(Race car Dyanamics) labels on them, and RCD part numbers.
