Transmission fluid leak from front, Torque Converter? Before I pull it I need parts!!
Hello Guys, from Australia,
09 F-450 King Ranch CC, DRW, 4x4, clean exhaust, Spartan Tuner 210 tow package, and I LOVE MY TRUCK.... Last of the big running gear F-450 in a KR... 40,000 kms so about 25,000 miles towing a gooseneck horsefloat at times... Now, minor tranny leak at front of transmission, and I am going to have it pulled. The question is what parts should I locate ahead of time? Is it likely to be the Torque Converter or is there some shaft seal? And if it IS the Torque Converter, should I upgrade to some higher performance one? Best regards, Cowboy out on the last Frontier, Australia |

Doubt its the converter it self but could be either seal for converter or front pump seal. But understand it is hard to know for sure without having the trans out because I have seen a cracked front pump also.

I just got off the phone with the mob down south that have sold and serviced a couple of hundred of these trucks. They have found one weld on a torque converter with a crack that developed, and one front seal... The problem is they are 2200 kms away, a long way to go.. heh he. I am going to tow a van down for a Show down in their area, so I can drop it off for a week to handle a couple of upgrades. I was just concerned that towing 7-8 ton of Gooseneck if I should upgrade the TC or not. Their opinion was not to bother...
From them, it appears that the TC is unlikely, and it might just be a seal, but your pool of information and trucks is about 50 times larger. and that is why I am asking for your opinions.. From all reports the 5R110 tranny is nearly bulletproof... Best regards from Australia |
