trans gives up or slams between 3rd and 4th gears

Ok was driving home from work tonight and about half way thru my 30 mile trip I start up from a stop sign about moderate throttle, when it goes to shift from 3rd to 4th its like it almost gave up, or slipped really badly, the rpms kept going up but i was losing speed, I let out and coasted tried again and shifted normal. The next intersection I babied it, no problems. The next stop sign I tried to get it to do it again, it hesitated a second on the 3-4 shift then slammed hard. It kept doing one or the other the whole time home. The past few days the truck has felt like there has been something holding it back, almost like the trans was slipping slightly. I have also noticed a clunk sometimes once it shifts into gear, almost like a really torn up ujoint, but everything is good and tight.

This truck has 40,000 or so miles, and out of warranty just had the trans flushed and both new filters at the dealership about 1000 mi ago. I checked the fluid, is cherry red at the full line and smells fine.

My old man had it before me, I bought it a few thousand miles ago, It is bare bones stock and has not ever pulled anything, and he babied the heck out of it all of its life so far.

Its going to the dealership wed to see whats going on but I was wondering if anybody has seen this before and can give me a heads up of whats wrong and how bad of shape my pocket book will be in.

Sorry for the long post, THANKS IN ADVNACE!!!!

It ended up being the most odd thing, I decided to give one of those bug fart cars an attitude readjustment a few days before this happened. (even bone stock I managed to stomp him LOL) I hit the speed limiter, which threw a code and little did my gauges tell me I was actually getting the trans and engine temps pretty hot. Basically the codes in the engine were saying that b/c of that it sent itself into some sort of unusual limp mode. They cleared the memory out, flashed to the newest calibrations, flushed the trans just in case and drives now like a champ, no problems for probably 750 miles. The trans warranty is actually 5 yr 60k, I did not know that, which made my day. Kudos to my local ford guys they always go above and beyond, didnt cost me a penny!!
