Smoking constantly, P0281, Running Rough, bad juju!

Ok guys,

I got on it a little on the highway today, not much was not WOT, something blew, and then she started smoking.

It will start right up but idles extremely rough, like one of the cylinders is not firing (p0281 cylinder #7 contribution/balance).

If I pull the dip stick it smokes/huffs so there is bad blow by apparently?

This happened very suddenly. Possible causes and possible cost?

Sounds like it might be a cracked piston

That's what I was afraid of, so forget an arm & a leg, just take the entire torso? What is the cost on that typically?

I asked Midwest diesel one time out of curiosity and he quoted me around $5,000. Hopefully its something else but if there is that much blow by its probably a piston.

Ok thanks, I don't think I'll even bother with return to stock/warranty, I'll just pony up and have them do studs/gaskets while it's open. Anything else I should have done while it's opened up?

Ok, so tomorrow I'll be calling the performance shop for a few estimates (they don't have the truck yet, but we are assuming hole in piston + getting new studs + maybe the new SCT Live Wire so I can check all my stuff). After I get a cost estimate, if it falls within my range I am thinking about having them throw in an Elite 71mm LP turbo, 6.0 manifolds, waste gate, bov, and maybe some new intake piping. Any thoughts?

Ported intake manifold and new oem lifters. Also updated hoses if they are the old style. Also new tensioners, idlers and belts.

Wow, I don't know what to do at this point, I'm going to have to try for warranty. I called the shop, they said $13k to rebuild or $20k for a new motor. Does that sound right? $13k assuming it only lost a piston?
