6.4 Powerstroke Noise

I have an 08 F-250 with a 6.4 PSD. It intermittently makes a terrible "knocking" noise under accelleration right before it hits the shift points. I believe it has something to do with the DPF regen cycle because the exhaust is cooking hot every time it happens, but I have only seen the "Cleaning Exhaust" message pop up once and only for a second. It has 4,800 miles on it now, but has done it since it was new. This is my third PSD, but the first with this "wonderful" new exhaust filter. If this is normal it can't be good for it with all the noise it is making! I'm afraid the thing is going to grenade every time I'm pulling a trailer and it happens. Any one have any info?

I gave my '03 7.3 with 180,000mi and no problems to my son, I think I want it back!!

.......do you notice a change in exhaust tone, does the truck seem to loose power, does your dash mileage go down, does it idle high when this happens? The reason I ask is because that would be regen, but it really shouldn't be noisy or knocking......the only thing you should notice is a deep exhaust tone

once mine gets up on the rpms the engine itself will completely change pitch. it will go from quiet like normal to sounding well more like a diesel then shift quiet again then loud again when the rpms get up? its done it since new i think it might have something to do with that second turbo kicking in but i really have no idea.

The knocking really doesn't sound right. I can't say I have ever heard anything like that from mine.

I guess "knocking" is a strong word, but that is what best describes it(imagine a high compression gas engine on cheap regular gas), I've had people in the truck when it does it and they are like what the hell is that? you'd better pull over. I've seen some white smoke, but not usually and the dash mileage doesn't seem to drop drastically but you can smell and feel the exhaust cooking. Does everyone else see the "Cleaning Exhaust" message usually? I literally caught it blink on and off once, but have never seen it stay on. I'm going to take it in to the dealership this week, but wanted to get some feedback from others first since they usually don't have a clue about PSD problems. I had to beat them over the head to get them to fix my 6.0 Excursion and dread dealing with them.

Mine makes the exact same engine noises you are referring to. It happens when it is in regen. It does not stay on the screen "Cleaning Exhaust". If you think you are in regen hit setup then reset and the computer does a system check. It will go through various checks on your truck and if it is in regen it will be the last check and will come up on the dash screen telling you that it is in fact "Cleaning Exhaust filter". Hope this helps.

Well it sounds like it only does it with regen, but it seems like there is something wrong when it goes into regen......I can picture the sounds you are talking about, but that does not sound right at all, get that sucker to the dealership

Knocking under hood.....

I have an 08 F450 6.4L dually at the dealer right now in for service. I was expieriencing the exact symptoms you are describing while towing. I was towing a dump trailer about 5,000 pounds when the motor starting knocking. It began to blow white smoke when I started to back off the gas the truck continued to accelerate with about 25 pounds of boost that would not go away for about 30 seconds. As I slowed the truck I heard a loud "boom" as if a cylinder went out and the truck stopped. I have the edge juice with attitude Mbrp exhaust and airraid intake. The computer coded about a dozen codes a few of which were cylinder number two failure,crank/camshaft failure/Egr failure/manifold overboost/etc.....

Bring your truck to the dealer now!! Do you have any aftermarket upgrades?
