Angry Suggestions Anyone?? :dunno:

Recently my '08 6.4 Liter F-250 SD has been a major disappointment. It begins as a reduction in power/boost then progresses to the point where it will not run over 40 mph on flat ground (which is all we have here on the Upper Texas Gulf Coast)! Also when this is going on it sounds as if there is a boost leak under the hood on the passenger side of the engine compartment. It has been back to the dealership 3 times and of course they have not been able to re-create the problem. Twice they claimed to perform a "re-flash" and the last time it was in the shop they replaced the air filter (at my expense of course) after keeping the truck for two days and the problem still exists.

During these episodes of "no power" I have not noticed any smoke (black or white) but the fuel mileage really turns to crap plus this is accompanied by a high pitch "whooshing sound" from the exhaust On one occasion It took a full tank of fuel to go approx 81 miles.

My gut feeling is that there is a restriction in the exhaust system (maybe the DPF is plugging)?? The truck only has 12 k miles on the odometer and is turning out to be a major dissapointment to me. Sure wish I had my '05 6.0 Liter SD that this "lazy turd" replaced.

Lookin' forward to suggestions/remedies from fellow members. Thanx in advance for your help.

I'm no expert but it sounds like it's going into regen mode. I'm sure someone will be along soon to help.

Good LORD! A tank to go 81 miles!?!? You bet your *** I'd have that thing at the dealership with a rental car on their dime until they figured it out!

Definitely something wrong there.

Is your oil at the normal level or is it over full? Just a thought.

Thumbs up Thanx

Yes the Oil is at the proper level and was changed just 400 miles ago. I also changed the fuel filters and that made no difference.

Thanx for the replies/ideas fellas. I am currently working the nite shift but when I wake up this afternoon I plan to remove the DPF myself to see exactly how badly this thing is plugged. If it appears to be the problem I plan to "visit" a different dealer, there is bound to be a dealership in the Greater Houston area that specializes in Powerstrokes. It's just frustrating as hell to spend $50K for a vehicle that the performance degraded on so quickly. When this truck had less than 1K miles on it we took a trip to the Carolina Coast and it ran like a champ. If I can just get it to perform like it did when it was new I would be ecstatic!!!

If it were a plugged DPF the problem would not go away and return.

If it is mechanical I would bet on the waste gate mechanism, but I do not know how these work. Other waste gates I have seen could cause a restriction problem in the exhaust header if they were defective. The lack of any error codes also indicates a mechanical problem.

When does this problem usually happen? On the higway, stop and go traffic, haulin a load.....81 miles to a tank is so bad thats not even funny.....have you been checking to make sure that you are using ULSD? The reason I ask is because good ol' #2 will clog that DPF faster than anything.......there also might be a possibly that your truck is not going to regen, which to some of us would be awesome, but in your case not so much. The truck may not be cleaning the DPF like it needs to that would explain why you could only go so fast.....but I'm not sure if its a good reason for the 81 miles to a tank

Thumbs up My thoughts exactly--Thanx for the reply!

You are thinking along the same lines as I am..one data point that re-enforces my hypothesis is that after each trip to the dealer (where they "forced" a regen while tinkering with the computer) the problem kinda went away. It gradually returns over time but it has been about two weeks since my last visit.

Thanx for all of the replys/suggestions....will keep y'all updated.

Yeah if it goes away after a "forced" regen then that is your problem......un-cork that bad boy!!!
