I got an 08 6.4L and sometimes starts going into a weird surge. If I put it in nuetral or park and put it back in drive, the surging stops for a while.. Anyone know what this is?

Was it cold outside? Engine fully warmed?
Mine does this when I first start it on a cold morning, it starts surging like that then after a minute or so it gradually begins reving up to warm up (oem high idle). |

Yep mine does exactly the same surging when first started in the morning. However once the engine warms up, it stops doing it.

No at full temp , seems to only do it then.

I just was in a regen and it said " cleaning filter" whenit switch back to "drive to clean" it stopped surging.. But my other experiences of the surging it never had those messages. Also if i give it to about 2500rpm the engine sounds like it goes into double time, almost like.a ping

I noticed this recently on mine also. It does it only after starting up on a cold engine that sat over night <40F. Weird because I don't remember noticing it that few times it sat in 20F weather. A friend of mine with the same truck complained about it a while ago too

Do those of you who have this cold surging, also notice excessive smoke at times?

When it is cold outside my truck will surge and does smoke prior to getting up to operating temperatures.
